Fox: Trillions Disappear in Stock Market, but Where Did Money Go?

From fox news
Trillions Disappear in Stock Market, but Where Did Money Go?
Saturday, October 11, 2008 | FoxNews.com

NEW YORK — Trillions in stock market value — gone. Trillions in retirement savings — gone. A huge chunk of the money you paid for your house, the money you're saving for college, the money your boss needs to make payroll — gone, gone, gone.

Whether you're a stock broker or Joe Six-pack, if you have a 401(k), a mutual fund or a college savings plan, tumbling stock markets and sagging home prices mean you've lost a whole lot of the money that was right there on your account statements just a few months ago.

But if you no longer have that money, who does? The fat cats on Wall Street? Some oil baron in Saudi Arabia? The government of China?

Or is it just — gone?

If you're looking to track down your missing money — figure out who has it now, maybe ask to have it back — you might be disappointed to learn that is was never really money in the first place.

Robert Shiller, an economist at Yale, puts it bluntly: The notion that you lose a pile of money whenever the stock market tanks is a "fallacy." He says the price of a stock has never been the same thing as money — it's simply the "best guess" of what the stock is worth.

"It's in people's minds," Shiller explains. "We're just recording a measure of what people think the stock market is worth. What the people who are willing to trade today — who are very, very few people — are actually trading at. So we're just extrapolating that and thinking, well, maybe that's what everyone thinks it's worth."

Shiller uses the example of an appraiser who values a house at $350,000, a week after saying it was worth $400,000.

"In a sense, $50,000 just disappeared when he said that," he said. "But it's all in the mind."

Though something, of course, is disappearing as markets and real estate values tumble. Even if a share of stock you own isn't a wad of bills in your wallet, even if the value of your home isn't something you can redeem at will, surely you can lose potential money — that is, the money that would be yours to spend if you sold your house or emptied out your mutual funds right now.

And if you're a few months away from retirement, or hoping to sell your house and buy a smaller one to help pay for your kid's college tuition, this "potential money" is something you're counting on to get by. For people who need cash and need it now, this is as real as money gets, whether or not it meets the technical definition of the word.

Still, you run into trouble when you think of that potential money as being the same thing as the cash in your purse or your checking account.

"That's a big mistake," says Dale Jorgenson, an economics professor at Harvard.

There's a key distinction here: While the money in your pocket is unlikely to just vanish into thin air, the money you could have had, if only you'd sold your house or drained your stock-heavy mutual funds a year ago, most certainly can.

"You can't enjoy the benefits of your 401(k) if it's disappeared," Jorgenson explains. "If you had it all in financial stocks and they've all gone down by 80 percent — sorry! That is a permanent loss because those folks aren't coming back. We're gonna have a huge shrinkage in the financial sector."

There was a time when nobody had to wonder what happened to the money they used to have. Until paper money was developed in China around the ninth century, money was something solid that had actual value — like a gold coin that was worth whatever that amount of gold was worth, according to Douglas Mudd, curator of the American Numismatic Association's Money Museum in Denver.

Back then, if the money you once had was suddenly gone, there was a simple reason — you spent it, someone stole it, you dropped it in a field somewhere, or maybe a tornado or some other disaster struck wherever you last put it down.

But these days, a lot of things that have monetary value can't be held in your hand.

If you choose, you can pour most of your money into stocks and track their value in real time on a computer screen, confident that you'll get good money for them when you decide to sell. And you won't be alone — staring at millions of computer screens are other investors who share your confidence that the value of their portfolios will hold up.

But that collective confidence, Jorgenson says, is gone. And when confidence is drained out of a financial system, a lot of investors will decide to sell at any price, and a big chunk of that money you thought your investments were worth simply goes away.

If you once thought your investment portfolio was as good as a suitcase full of twenties, you might suddenly suspect that it's not.

In the process, of course, you're losing wealth. But does that mean someone else must be gaining it? Does the world have some fixed amount of wealth that shifts between people, nations and institutions with the ebb and flow of the economy?

Jorgenson says no — the amount of wealth in the world "simply decreases in a situation like this." And he cautions against assuming that your investment losses mean a gain for someone else — like wealthy stock speculators who try to make money by betting that the market will drop.

"Those folks in general have been losing their shirts at a prodigious rate," he said. "They took a big risk and now they're suffering from the consequences."

"Of course, they had a great life, as long as it lasted."

囍帖街

名稱:囍帖街
歌手:謝安琪
作曲:Eric Kwok
填詞:黃偉文
編曲:Eric Kwok
監製:Eric Kwok

Busy searching for truth(s)

If there is ever a truth or a number of truths for the matter of life, I would be delighted to know that. Spending most of my time looking for it/them and has no success so far makes me wonder if the effort worthwhile. It might be just a puppy chasing its tail action, which is something that I will never know.
What I do realize is that, the truth can come in different degrees of certainty (so as evidence in legal). As an engineer, what works in the lab and still reproducible every time (most of the time up to 99.9%) it shows that you have got something right. The hard part is the one to get there, but once you are there, you are fine. As a patent engineer, I think it works differently. You might be able to draft a good argument in minutes or hours. The effort required depends on how much you are willing to spend. However, you would think that you have come to the result, the fact is it is still subjected to the interpretation of all other people who will read your work at some point of time in the future (or never). The contrast is, you think you have parked well at the destination, it is never a "sure" thing, and always subjected to further discussion. When you think that you will be having easier life because now you don't have to work to the absolute rightness, the target of absolute rightness has become multiple targets. You get one of them, you dont get to cover them all.

searching for free air

Not knowing that air is so precious in california, I searched literally all the gas stations along El camino. To my disappointment, air is only fee at Colorado but the offer does not extend to California.
Here in california, everything is about money. If Singapore is materialistic, California is the place that you live buried in dimes and pennies. Everything is attached to a price here. Every service is charged by hour. The only thing that I treasure most and still free is the library access. Although I am not sure how long the priviledge will be available.

I remembered back in 90's, EON service had an advertisement that showcased a lady who sent her car to a service center for the steering was too hard to turn. Acting defensely, she argued that the price quoted for service was too expensive, when the service agent told her that "air is free for the car tires."

What if the economy of US really collapses? What does it mean when the economy collapses. Are the people do not produce enough? OR they produce less relatively? If the consumption is less than the production, does it result to the disaster? What about the huge investment of US funds?
While I am not sure how would I survive for the rest of the life if the money issue keep hovering over my head.

come to know noun strings

I don't know that people called them that, even though they appear very frequently in my words. It is a happy thing to know that they exist and they are legitimate, even though warnings are given to people who deal with them. Potentially, they become bad stains to your writing. Here are some comments on noun strings:

From

http://trc.ucdavis.edu/bajaffee/SAS90B/Course%20Content/Grammar%20Syllabus/nouns%20as%20adjectives.htm

Nouns as adjectives
====================

Some authors advise against using nouns as adjectives, but consider the following example, where the first two words are nouns functioning as adjectives:
(a) Plant disease diagnosis requires both traditional and new techniques.
To avoid using the nouns as adjectives, you would need to add two prepositional phrases:
(b) The diagnosis of diseases of plants requires both traditional and new techniques.
How do you decide which is better? As always, use your ear (listen for rhythm or its absence) and most importantly, consider your reader. I would use (a) because the noun string isn't difficult to understand and doesn't wring the rhythm from the sentence, whereas the repetitive start of (b) The diagnosis/ of diseases /of plants/ is deadening. A third version would be fine:
(c) The diagnosis of plant disease requires both traditional and new techniques.
Now let's use a longer string of nouns as adjectives:
(d) Plant disease diagnosis technology has become sophisticated.
Your ear and brain should tell you that something is wrong with (d). When too many nouns are strung together as adjectives, the reader must wait too long to understand how the nouns are functioning. There is also a consonance problem (disease diagnosis technology).

I would revise (d) to (e) but not to (f):
(e) The technology of plant disease diagnosis has become sophisticated.
(f) The technology of the diagnosis of diseases of plants has become sophisticated.

In the following example (g), note how the excessive use of nouns as adjectives complements a static writing style:
(g) Earthworm burrow construction information has increased our understanding of soil stable aggregate formation.
Rather than resorting to prepositions, I would find an actor and action.
(h) By studying how earthworms construct burrows, we better understand how stable aggregates form.

From
http://www.designsensory.com/pws/lesson5/index.html
Unraveling Adjective-Noun Strings, Reducing Preposition Sprawl

A problem closely related to excessive use of jargon is excessive use of "adjective-noun strings"--that is, long strings of words that stack up in an attempt to modify a single word. These strings are common in science, technology, industry, and government. But that doesn't make them good professional style. They may sound impressive (if you allow yourself to be impressed by that sort of thing), but they are hard to decipher and are therefore bad style.

Here's a fairly simple example:
employee compensation level evaluation procedures

Tell the truth: didn't your brain stick and sputter over that phrase a couple times before you grasped its meaning? I'd have made your reading task easier if I'd written:
procedures for evaluating the compensation level of employees

Now unravel this string:
military trainee firing range regulations orientation manual

You should have come up with something like:
manual for orienting trainees to the regulations of a military firing range

The fundamental technique for unraveling adjective-noun strings is to read them backwards and break them into smaller modifying units, using prepositional phrases and sometime entire clauses. However, using this reversal technique doesn't mean that you always reverse the exact word order represented in the adjective-noun string, as you'll see in Exercise 1. Still, for many adjective-noun strings, a straight back-to-front flip (peppered with a few prepositions and articles) is all that's needed:
building radon source location method

We know the writer is telling us about some kind of method. A method for locating something. Locating what? The source of something. The source of what? Radon. What kind of radon? Radon in buildings. So, flipping the adjective-noun string front to back, we get:
method for locating the source of radon in buildings

Much easier to read, don't you agree?

Another technique for unraveling adjective-noun strings is to hyphenate chunks in the strings to show better modification: "Oil bearing shale deposits" becomes "oil-bearing shale deposits," lest your reader think you mean: "oil that bears shale deposits." There's a big difference between a man-eating shark and a man eating shark.

Remember, the rule is to hyphenate bundles of modifying words when they fall before the word they modify: "a pea-green boat" versus "a boat that was pea green."

You may argue that the first versions in all these examples are shorter than the second; am I not violating my own principle of "fat trimming"? Shouldn't professional communications be as brief as possible? Well, yes and no. Certainly, they should get the job done with as much economy, power, and persuasiveness as possible. But what IS the job? Saving space on paper or on a computer screen? No! The job is always to supply the reader's needs, and/or accomplish your persuasive purpose, while exhausting a minimum of the reader's mental energy.

True, in the previous four units I've urged you to use active voice, denominalize, trim fat, and reduce jargon, all of which tend to reduce sentence length at the same time they make sentences easier to read and information easier to assimilate and remember. But with unraveling adjective-noun strings, the task of making sentences easier to read happens to increase sentence length a little. Don't worry about that. I repeat: your goal as a communicator should be to supply the reader's needs, and/or accomplish your persuasive purpose, while exhausting a minimum of the reader's mental energy.

This is not a new idea. Over a century ago, Herbert Spencer argued this idea persuasively in an essay entitled "The Philosophy of Style." In that essay, Spencer points out that the more energy a reader must expend in wrestling with the form of a communication, the less energy he has available to expend upon its content. Conversely, the less mental energy he must expend in grappling with a communication's form, the more he'll have available to devote to its content. You definitely want the folks reading your communications to fall into category "B."

Why do adjective-noun strings exhaust so much of the reader's mental energy? Precisely because such strings pack nouns and modifiers together like figs and nuts, without doing enough to show us the relationship between the parts; consequently, they leave the reader to do the work of unpacking and sorting.

The other good reason to break up long adjective-noun strings is that they are often ambiguous, as we saw in the example of "man eating shark" and "oil bearing shale."

Let's deal with the following adjective-noun string in its full sentence context:

New motorcycle motor durability equipment tests are being performed by engineers.

This could mean:

Engineers are using new equipment to test the durability of motorcycle motors,
or:
Engineers are performing new tests on the equipment that makes motorcycle motors durable,
or:
Engineers are performing tests on the equipment that checks the durability of new motorcycle motors,

--or several other things. Often, if you are editing (or simply reading) the prose of another professional who is prone to express himself in adjective-noun strings, you will have to ask for clarification.

Very well! Let's see how you do at unraveling the following adjective-noun strings. As always, type your answer before looking at mine.

To Stay and To leave

I believe end of the day. I will leave.
To me, freedom is all I could have. Born poor is something hard to change. Mind free is the only property that I own. Not anyone should take it from me.
The government and the governed. Well said, when the ministers can raise their own salaries without much debate, without any road block from the opposition, the future is clear that - you prosper if you are a Scholar now.

I wonder what does it mean to be a politician here. If you don't have any political rights. You don't debate. You execute whatever from the top to the down. You said you do not have much error margin to experiment with. Yes, I do agree.

And that's why I have to decide. End of the day, I can not see myself not suffering under the future policies. The future rules that say: you worker class, strive as hard as cows so that you could live in one room flat and eat at coffee shops with stinking old uncles (by the time, you are one of them). Obey whatever the elistists tell you. We the elitists in return, make sure you will survive although in a shameful way.

Home - Think of home lyrics

Home (Think of home) - diana ross - the wits

When I think of home
I think of a place where theres love overflowing
I wish I was home
I wish I was back there with the things I been knowing
Wind that makes the tall trees bend into leaning

Suddenly the snowflakes that fall have a meaning
Sprinkling the scene, makes it all clean
Maybe theres a chance for me to go back there
Now that I have some direction
It would sure be nice to be back home
Where theres love and affection

And just maybe I can convince time to slow up
Giving me enough time in my life to grow up
Time be my friend, let me start again

Suddenly my world has changed its face
But I still know where I'm going
I have had my mind spun around in space
And yet I've watched it growing

If you're listning god
Please dont make it hard to know
If we should believe in the things that we see
Tell us, should we run away
Should we try and stay
Or would it be better just to let things be?

Living here, in this brand new world
Might be a fantasy
But it taught me to love
So its real, real to me
And I've learned
That we must look inside our hearts
To find a world full of love

scene from roof top

The pictures are buried in my cell phone for many many years. The first was taken at the line (queue) for the entrance to a book sales. The crowd were just enormous. It was quite surprising for I never expected people here like books that much. Sometimes, it make me think that the price reduction is the main reason for the big crowd. Vividly remember they were people who asked their maid to wait in the line, while they sat some where else.It is sorry to see that but the fact is no one feel awkwared about it here. That itself is something awful.

The second and third pictures was taken from the rooftop of vivo city. Not knowing if the shallow water pool was meant for playful kids or merely a decoration, I was annoyed to see even family picnics took place there.

May be the citizens have gone of out place to plan their picnics at weekend. Bravo to the planner of vivo city who come out with such idea to attract the shoppers.

Well I'm assuming you need to know how to use MySQL with C# in general so I'll post this...
I personally use the MySQL.DataClient when using MySQL with .NET so I'll post that, though there are other options, just google .NET and MySQL.

You can download them from:
http://dev.mysql.com/downloads/connector/net/1.0.html

Code:

using MySql.Data.MySqlClient;

Connection string...
private string connectionString = "Server=localhost;Database=yourtable;User ID=youruser;Password=yourpw;Pooling=false";

Main body...

MySqlConnection MySqlConn = new MySqlConnection(connectionString);
MySqlConn.Open();

MySqlCommand MySqlCmd = MySqlConn.CreateCommand();
MySqlCmd.CommandText = "SELECT MAX(field) FROM table";

try
{
MySqlDataReader MySqlRead = MySqlCmd.ExecuteReader();

while (MySqlRead.Read())
{
Console.Write(MySqlRead.GetString(0));
}

MySqlRead.Close();
MySqlRead = null;
}
catch (MySqlException e)
{
Console.WriteLine(e.Message);
}
finally
{
MySqlConn.Close();
MySqlConn = null;
}

Not so common afterall

Common sense - not so common after all

When I passed by the corridor .. A worker was fixing the electric lining of the lights. He was on a portable ladder and holding a electrical drill. The floor was scatter with pieces of dirts and paint fallling from the wall. Surprisingly, there is not warning sign located around the work area. Instinctly, I moved away from there.
Just then, a small kid, happily walking through the work area and couldn't help to stop and watch for a while. While the drill was still operating, I was worried what would happen to him if that gadget fell on his little head. His face may not be as cute as used to be.

It is to me common sense. Walk away from construction area, avoid the work area, move away from the workers who are doing the lawn. The new generation seems to forget about the danger. They are not educated to that.
You could blame some other party for not setting up the warning sign. End of the day, the consequence is irreversible and the regret is on your own.
And then, I can't help but wonder.. when we say common sense. It is not so common after all. It change with geography , with time and may be with people. There is nothing to rely on, when it come to common sense. The only common sense that you could believe is, common sense change.

Letter for vandetta

Letter to vandetta

hi vandetta,

I think I miss you. Simply as a friend. I think what I need is just a listener. You don't have to approve on what you heard. I need the nodding once in a while to signifiy that you have heard. Yes, I need to pour out a bit of the contents in the bottom brain (heart) .. so that it won't be overflow.
Has it been a rough week. Full of tension, expectation, frustration and hope. Met with evil persons (collegues ) and met with kind angels (strangers). The good and the bad are not necessary as what you expected. The good and the bad give you the biggest impact while you were on these big emotional ride.
I am moving slowly, with little tiny hope towards the exit. Which still seem a very far far distance away. I am working / procrastinating towards the end. During the process, not wanting to lose everything, I am trying very hard to grab on different things. The exercise, the reading and my work.
Do I have enough hands to hold on them. I wonder. I need to tell myself . I will be fine.

Just would like to remember this special curry bun meal. Bought at narita airport, about 9 USD per meal. (you don't think japan is cheap don't you). The curry is not spicy at all, although you can see some of the visitors were having difficult time to deal with it.
Sometimes, when we are on the road, we tend to move out of our comfort zone. The outside world, spurs up our adventurous spirit making everyone a hero. I wonder are all the pilots feel the same way whenever they fly to a new place. You just have to be more courageous and bold to experience the culture.
Yet, with globalisation waves flooding the whole world, one can always find goods that origine from thousands of miles away. (ignore the fact that Africa is part of the world ). It is quite stupid to try new thing at new place and put yourself out there for humiliation. What I am saying is, you don' t have any excuse to explain your ignorance to others culture, because we are one world now.

hougang horrible yet the best

Never thought of there is such scene in Singapore.
When I was amazed by HongKong people spirit to walk out for their rights, I always believe that no such thing in singapore. However, these pictures prove me wrong. Even that it could be temporary hype factor because of election hit, it is still a WoW to me. Singaporeans (in most case ) earn my respect today.

story teller

You got have good story to tell... of course. The story line must be new and exciting or painful or extremely unique so that no one would ever forget.. May be what I am saying is that it is what a story is all about. Else it should not be a story at all.
Although, looking through my own story, which I really mean the blogs that I have rubbished. I realized that some are horribly boring just like the person who wrote it. Exactly, who would want to read such tasteless expression.
There are yet some good (adjective: interesting, invigorating) one. It is quite obvious that, if the story was told to others, it sound nicer ( adjective : pleasant ) than the one that only me talking to myself.
Don't you think so ?

Therefore, I am very pleased to announce that -- a good story teller must always only tell the story to others but not to himself/herself.

Somehow, remember those were the days where I have writen tons and tons of essays and compositions for examination preparation. In many languages and in many genre, they are. Argumentative, narrative, descriptive ( although limited to adjective such as : good, nice , pleasant and pretty ) .. you name it. The good-essay need to have certain quality. I just can not remember all of them. And also, If I could, I may not be able to reproduce what I have written now. Ultimately, time has changed, mind is gone. Mentally, I could never be the myself in 17 again.

If day allows, it is endearing to read them back. I wish the special afternoon will realize in future.

30 mins and 24 hours

It sometimes strike me if I begin to compute the time we spend for transportation.
The distance of less than 1 km would take as much as 3o0 minutes to commute. One major reason is the unpredictable public transport schedule and moderate distance involved. Although categorized as high quality public transport, it does not eliminate the fact that "waiting" is just part of it.
The detail composition of a bus ride, would consist of the walking distance from source to the first bus stop, then the waiting time of the bus stop. When the bus start to move, then you see waiting time in front of traffic lights, waiting time of pedestrian way, boarding and alighting of passengers at every bus stop and finally arriving at the last bus stop. Wait a minute, that's not the end of it. Usually you still have to walk a short distance to the final destination.
Taking into all the consideration, it is apparent that why a short 1 km ride can end up as long as 30 minutes. We have not mentioned about the rainy day effect, traffic jam at peak hours. And we are still talking about 1 leg ride. In many occasion, the passenger have to transfer to another service ( or more than 1 ) before arriving at destination. Oh my god.
Now, you may argue that: driving on your own will take similar time. What I am trying to say is, in your own vehicle you have a private space that somehow is very comfortable, cosy , with your own genre of music on radio, and most importantly a guranteed place to sit. No one will pick his nose in front of you, no one shout at the cell phone, and no smelly dirty freaks besides you.. and definitely no other people sneezing behind you ( that's is creepy ). Also you have storage to keep all the luggage and hand-carry. If you are lucky you have favourite beverage just at the reach of your left hand.
So, imagine the time we spend of transport every day. I wish god bless us all with less painful transportation. I wish scientist bless us with the transporter in those science fic. movie.

blink and blink continue..

More on the "blink "

5 - Paul van riper's big victory - about a general retired from vietnam war. who has the gifted sense of ad-hoc situation during war. he defeated the opponent side which has very affluent information about everything in the war. Yet, the information seems to be too overloading to digest even with a "expert system" computer .
Another example is the cook hospital in chicago. the use of computer recognition problem mine the rule - found three criterias are the most relevant to critical cardio problem when the patients have chest pain. Text processing on one side of the brain can over-shadow the functionality of the other side of the brain that manage image. So it is good to break down the task separately.

6 - Kenna's dilemma - the right and worng way to ask people what they want.
--> pepsi challege with short sip is different from long drink time. package is many ways important.
--> why disney mickey has glove.. otherwise no one loves him with the claw out .
--> aeron chair -- the allen chair. - when the product is revolutionary.. can not rely on history data.
-- with really really a lot of experience. might be able to expose the locked door..
what a reverse statment to make. -- when it is working, attribute it to inner locked door. and always has a way to explain the other method was mimicking the "behind locked door" ..

7 - Seven seconds in bronx -
- killed of one innocent immigrant because of multiple
- lack of time can be the reason of missing "blicnk"

In short - the book does not have a stand. it discuss but it is unable to give any conclusion.
8 - Listening with your eyes -

blink and blink

Reading a book with title blink.

I have not come to conclusion on how useful it is. Possibly one of the so-so book that is written in easy language that I just flow through.

Mostly it is discussing concious mind and sub-concious mind.
Why do we have to pay attention to sub-concious mind. how different is sub-concious mind. The sub-concious mind is thin-slicing. it is simple and can be sometime more accurate to follow.

In contrary, you can find some instance that you won't want to follow the instant mind. Is there any guildlines to follow. In life / dead situation. you follow instinct.. the back door feel. In most day-to-day life, what do you do.

It also try to show the existence of such powerful - " locked /hidden " mind that enable the decision in a wink of time - blink.

Examples given is a good set of compilation (variety of psycology tests) . It is at least the effort of the author to pull everything together

1 - The status of kouros - how thin-slice work - no reason is produced
2 - The theory of thin slices - e.g. gottman's couple test about their positive/negative atttitude. interview for candidates of a jobs - you just have to find the most essential info that has the biggest influence. thin-slicing is good at it. our instinct is good at it. our usual way of solving problem (objectively) with survey and empirical method may not always be the good/correct way. In the example of couple relationship -- if there is a contempt ..then the marriage won't be long.

3 - The locked door - tennis player double fault/ speed dating / two ropes in a room.. the concious mind can be a noise to the sub-conscious mind. how could you filter the noisy concious mind. there are people who conciously know the correct and wrong Yet unable to act on it.

4 - The warren harding error - thin slicing can be dark side. the choice of warren harding as president was a bad decision. It was based on impression. and strong assiocation of external look. We all associate. Example of implicit associate test is really freaking me out. very true. It measuers our level of subconcious / altitude. also CEOs are average taller.. car salesman error to filter potential customer .. bottom line is you have to find out that you have the weakness of certain sub-concious and overcome it. easy to say.
note: very interesting IAT test

committed workers

committed workers

bad bad ... writing scrappy note during office hours. My fellow co-workers from US may not understand this. For a typical asian office slave, doing something else while sitting in front of office desk is a sin. This would probably similar to the culture difference when I ask if men will happily become house-men and women become the bread-winner.

On the contrary, I personally think it is perfectly okay. However, the societies that I live will not like it. And the question remains how much I would do to please the society and the people. May be it is time to think of changing the society of living in.

Do you agree?

the diving island

It is always in my mind. Some place that one should at least put his/her feet on this island. The sipadan. Unfortunately (?)_ up until now, I have no take any action to do it. It is definitely on any of my priority list.
After japan, korea, or even Shang hai i would say.
The island is really a heaven to divers, and anyone who love love love the crystal clear sea water and cast-away feel from city noise.
My friend got this picture taken : I would believe, as such place, it is time to forget about any unhappy time. The world can be an island if you find the correct place to go.
Sometime I wonder, how much time should I spend to plan for my future life. How much of me should be in the future, how much of me should at the present. You couldn't just live the life now, or live the last minute of current life. It seems to take away all the hopes from you. It also prevent any accumulate efforts that you need for civil success. (in the definition of most people)
To live in future, aka plan well for future. Does it has any similarity to the karma or next-life in Buddism. It is something in the future, where no one knows what would happen.
The person who spends most of his time predicting what would happen, reacting to any signal he sees throught the crystal ball, does not turn out to be the successful one too.
Our capability as a human being is simply too weak.

why you got stared

You can't blame them to stare at you .
No one has to be blamed because it is the city .
Everything is so dull and boring.
You only can observe people. And that is why you get stared.
Because apparently, no other thing to see in this world.

chicken to the duck

Different cultures, different races, different language, different background.. The list can be never end.
In mandarin, it is simple 4 words proverb. chicken talking to duck.. means .. communication is HARD.

http://www.backgroundsarchive.com/images/pub/5/5930qkipol12hu.jpg

When we are told that we are adults, we should be more sensitive to others feeling, it actually may translate to how much truth you would reveal to the public. I happen to just join the club, and still wondering IF I want to follow the belief.
One of my collegues from west, a very matured person, make me feel that, they have a very matured culture too in handling varios situation. She is professional in relationship and also very HIGH EG qualified too.

It is an ART. How much truth you want to put out there, may equal to how much less-friendly (in reverse to HOSTILE) you would be. YET, hiding the true self behind an encapsulated interface, would it make the situation worsen in future???

May I suggest AT LEAST one common practice to all the people in the world, when we are talking honestly (swear with heart), we should do the "wim-ga-bo" hand-sign as in the pocahontas. Thus, we mutually understand that the following contents are really truthful. It is not because of shity culture-respect excuse.

I am still wondering, what is wrong if the people of certain culture is mean and NOT friendly and hostile. If that is the way they live, do we have any right to force them change to our way. If that is how when they being truthful to themselves, do we want to make them fake smiling to us ?? May be, I should be more tolerable to stone face (including the one in my mirror).. so long I am a honest person to myself and others, I am a good person. Do you reckon that ?

who get to sit in my car.

I don't have a car.. not here and not any where else. As much as what my friend tot that I might believe that owning a car here will reflect the social status... I don't believe in such crap.. Though, i reckon that I am living in a society where many "others" people would think so.

I know driving is not environmentally-friendly. Yet, what on earth that I do daytoday is ever kind to this pity gReen earth.. it is green because it felt sick badly.

Back to the argument, who would sit in my car. If you ever own one, or if you are having one, would you actually have a preference list on people who could get in your car. Imagine there is a car-pool coordinator that request you for help to ferry some friends and collegues to a gathering (*about 30 mins short ride). would you ever thought of SPECIFYING ONLY the SPECIFY people to join you ???

I think it is really a mean thing to do. I am not sure.. My friend think that, the owner of the car should have the right to say so. I am left with no-reply. I can't produce very strong judgement to convince that it is not appropriate to have such "discrimination".. ONLY, i can't help but thinking, IF I am the one who got shoo away from someone else car, it must be very injuring.. internally.

OK>. for the constructive side, because of this, I am not planning to own a car here.. (checklist ticked).

Taken from public domain :)

Yeah, it is not like sitting in such a glamorous car, who cares...
OPSY.. think I am also car-status awared person.

cold winter

It's again a cold winter.. I felt it this time, even more because it has been rainy days for the past week. Not sure if the weather continues, if my heart will die or florish after the rain.
Most of the time it is quite hard to put in the exact feeling, or facts because of my limited vocabulary strength. I am too old to pick up new words as those in my repository is keep missing as my age grow.
The cold winter starts with many many incidents.
The politic at work.. not at colorful as narnia, but it is enough to make me laugh at those people what is in their mind ??? I am fortunately safe from the whirlpool this round. Not knowing whether I will be safe next time. Keep reminding myself don't get near to that..

The winter will soon be over, if I am hardworking. The winter will soon be over if I have more courage. The winter will soon be over if I knew what I wanted to do with myself. Yes, as much as I enjoy the winter.. please let it be over.

they walked on street again

Singtao NOV 25th www.singtao.com

Hongkong people walked out again .. It is the same request, they want more people voice in the government and they want to have public voting starting from 2007 and 2008.
I think all chinese should be proud of taiwanese and hongkongies who are not afraid of speaking up for themselves. Although there may be some manipulation and caveats behind all this..
At least they have a way to show their power. Those who criticize the democracy is not the right way, is probably brain-washed by some other party.
It is very simple to me, when your voice is heard. Your are living in democrary. When you don't have your voice heard in any place (except your own blog)..you just have NO right to criticize other's freedom.

sleepless in Seattle

I believe that when Einstein "invented" his famour mc(square)... he might not have thought that it all boils down to the matter of "money". The distance of traveling, the speed, the amount of load you could bring. These are all the money matters when you are traveling. Even though we know that light travel at fastest speed, that does not solve our problem that we still unable to make ourselves appear at two sides of the world with low cost solution.

The places may be just a flight away. The american might not understand that it is really the airfares that are stopping in between?? The britain would probably complain about the time on the planes.

I am in the dillemma. The go and no-go.. Both are not wise choice. Iwill miss a lot of good memories that is going to happen at here. On the other hand... losing a opportunity to gain new experience out there..

It is probably the little lovely hut in the snow. All the questions lead me to a sleepless night, except that I am not at Seattle. When I have not consider so many factors, decipher so many messages... Could I just simply believe whatever I was told. Or should I at least keep my eye open. The new cost structure, the new calling card, the new expense claim.. The new en-slavement policy..No sign of getting better.

Shall I again be deported the far far country as a slave again ??

fundamentally unmarriageable

i think i am fundamentally unmarriageable.. it is just the spontaneous idea in my mind..
with all the math class i went through all these year while schooling, i simply know that the odds of two persons in love is freakingly small.
Yet, that is not sth. that I am surprise of. I would accept that if in our eastern culture, we do accept marriage that not based on love (or at least feeling to each other ), it did not occur to me that far at the other side on the earth, my lovely american friend is able to accept the concept so well.
Pardon me, that after so many years of imperialisme .. I simply believe that my people are much down to earth (aka materialistic and realistic), we strive to survive , making sure we are not going to die with famine. Hence, it is acceptable if we consider wedding a ceremony and marriage a companion ship to life.
I would want to believe that, at the other end of earth. The "westerners" would be more romantic, reluntant to accept anything less than "love".. apparently it is not.

May be.. it is the time, or the place. I am not ready to believe that the za za zoo butterfly when you fall in love will die eventually. If that so, why would I get a fixed partner in life ??
NONETHELESS , i know that someday i would regret. Those majority out there are choosing to settle with marriage, they must be correct. Otherwise they will not be the majority.

Somewhere out there ....

the chicken little dance with numa numa

who would thought that it all starts with a funny video clip..

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Numa_Numa

NumaNumaDance.com - The original numa numa clip.

The numa numa song is said to have a big hit across the globe. Further now, with the new disney cartoon launch the chicken little, this Numa numa song is going to be a big hit.

You can actually make the cute little chicken dance for you at
http://disney.go.com/disneypictures/chickenlittle/

Attracted by the move , (yeah.. the move ) which reminds me of 80's disco scene... where donna summer were the queen. I wish the little chicken little wil make a success .
It is always happy to know that, dreams come true for someone.. especially the someone with kindered heart.

I can't tell what is the magic embedded in the song.. it just make me feel like dancing.. and howling with it. NO offence, the lyrics may means something very deep.. to me, it is the joyful yelp.. (?)

the night is still young

You might be wonder.. what sort of life there for people who live at a place where temperature never fall below 28 celcius... It is hot and humid. I might be not honest to you if I tell you it is a blessed. Yet, stories from friend make me learn that, cold countries people will like the warm (note: not hot) weather all the time.. becoz you can do something like this.. .

Yeah.. could you feel the warmth.. After several days/months/years of hiding inside my shell.. There is one day, I stepped out to the world. I realize that despite the weather is still as HOT as it was. The people has learnt their way to enjoy the most of it. Hence, when you find that it is time for you to stop reading blog, and do something real. I suggest you to bring ur friends and family for dinner outside.. or better yet a picnic at park.

Time flies

It shocked me when I found out that it has been more than 0.5 month that I didn't update here. Time is passing by faster than anything. Faster than it take me to think of something to bla here.

I was busy with a lot of office procedures, application, routines, and many other so-call black and white ways lately. Can't even remember how many signatures i have put, can't remember how much quotation i get. All these had made me down to the place that i can not work efficiently. I was worried.

Worry about everything that can goes wrong. Even for very standard procedure, thing can go wrong, if it wants to. I know I am worried about something that out of my control. Something that i shouldn't think of at the first place.

Yet, if all the worries can go away, then i won't be writing this part.

The next thing i know after i have a satisfying answer from previous problem, is new coming problem. Life is not like wind surfing, the wave has not stopped at all. It keeps me challenged all the time.

May be it is the way i interpret them. All the waves are meant to be fun but not worrying stuff.
When will I start to learn to take on all these stuff and enjoy ? I wonder.

Something..

It is a miracle word. It refers to all things. It means nothing. Something special can means you have everything so special, it is just i could not spell it out loud. Something special can also means i find nothing special in you, yet it is too rude to tell the truth.

When someone ask you if you have any thought. You can always say you have something in mind but need some time to process. Who does not have something in mind? There is ALWAYS something in mind. Even a mentally retarded person is using his brain all the time, only at a different frequency.

When someone ask if you have special feeling to her. You can reply: You are really something. Who is not a thing. Everyone has his/her physical entity, everyone is always "something". We are never nothing. So, say no more "something" to me.

Something is something that we use when we have no answer, refuse to give answer, hesitate to be honest and also when there is actually "something".

talk too much

Talking is an output or result of thinking. Sometimes, you find yourself think too much, so you want to release the burden. You talk. After some time, you finish with all the material or contents that you can think of, you stop talking and start thinking again.

Talking and thinking are two interdependant process. You don't talk if you don't think. You don't think if you don't need to talk. We may or may not be aware that, talking actually takes up a lot of our time everyday. Somehow, it depends on what kind of job you are working.

I always feel terribly exhausted after a long chat. I use all my mind plus full concentration when i talk. It is what i think sincerity. If you really think and talk to me, you would know i can be your truly friend indeed.

Your friends and your objectives

Young can be fun, because changes happen everyday.
When you feel young, you know you have to develop yourself.  You must not be lazy or aimless. Otherwise, you would regret the rest of your life.
Apparently all the "you" and "your" should be replaced by "my" and "I". It is something I can not refuse to agree. Yet, I would not want it to be something haunting me.

Aim, objectives, aspiration are all big words. You would know what is good unless you have attended at least two semesters at Hogwarts by Prof Trelawney. By the end of the courses, you learn the truth that, only gifted person can see what lays beyond present.

For me, non-gifted person. It is hard to aim nor to set goals. Thus it is even harder to find out what courses are good for me, what can help me in future, or even am I good enough in certain ability to cope with future demand.

Sad but true, we need feedback or comment from friends. You need to find out the loophole of present (although you don't know if the loophole mattters in future) I tried to cover my weakness. So dear friends, in order to get me ready for future, I need your sincere, honest comments.

About our dream

I believe all of us were borned with dreams. Some say we even started to dream when we were in our mothers' body. It is not known that, why god made us dream. Yet, it is clear that, without a dream, life might not as vibrant as now.

"The prince and me" is a story where a farm girl from wincosin who has a big ambition to be a medical doctor falls in love to a prince from denmark who strands into her life just like a fairy tale. The dream is a familiar one to all the ladies out there. To be a queen, and marrying a handsome king. However, in reality, i believe she is the who has given the prince a dream contrastingly.

In life, we can not dream too much. When people complain about not having enough sleeping time, most of them have lose the right of dreaming to work pressure. Without a dream,  life can be too real and too miserable. No imagination and no hope.

we should be generous to ourselves. Give ourselves enough time to sleep and dream. And, more importantly, if possible we should not forget that we can be someone else's dream bearers. We can be someone who makes other's dream comes true.

Favourite food

While i was think what to write everyday, I remembered my friend's advice. It can be something you do everyday. Thus, you have unlimited material to write everyday.

Hmm.. except dreams and frustrating travel, i hardly can think of anything that is fun and interesting to jot down except my lunch. Ever since, the authority has changed all the food operators at the canteen, i find myself enjoy my lunch and anticipate it everyday.

Delicious food, reasonable price. So it is about quality and quantity satisfication. I have no idea, what's wrong with the old operators. It is just that new one is better than old one.
Just to end the story... my lunch is macaroni in soup with shrimp dumplings :) yummy.

A blog about procrastination

I was wondering why we procrastinate.
As we all know, time never comes back. After all, I don't see how time travel will become reality in the next few decades. As we realize the fact, we usually let time goes by without treasuring it.
Blogging or day dreaming are now two things I considered taking my time away and return nothing to me. I am officially wasting my time by writing "waste of time".
Ironically, I continue to type.. at least let me finish the list below:

Why we procrastinate?
A few reasons:

  • Lack of confidence of work?
  • We don't think by working hard, you will be rewarded
  • We started to believe gold will fell from sky
  • We think today never ends
  • There must be a better time in future to do this..
  • No interest in the stuff
  • Too impatient, want to move on and so desperate to skip current work

So what are the remedies?

  • Be more confident. Remember the americans' can do spirit
  • You need to work to get reward... psyco yourself to believe in it
  • No, gold only comes from ground
  • Today or every other days are only 24 hours = 1440mins
  • But too bad, you are always in Present.
  • You just have to visualise the goodies you will have by finishing it.
  • One step at a time, man.

Since when we blog?

A blog is basically a journal that is available on the web. The activity of updating a blog is "blogging" and someone who keeps a blog is a "blogger." Blogs are typically updated daily using software that allows people with little or no technical background to update and maintain the blog. Postings on a blog are almost always arranged in cronological order with the most recent additions featured most prominantly. .
www.matisse.net/files/glossary.html

I just wonder since when we started to blog or to read blogs. I never had one before. (of course). Since when, while we are thirst for privacy in life, longing to own a kingdom of ourselves, we started to feel lonely and decided to open our heart to others? A dairy that everyone will read. Who would buy the idea 10 years ago, except those who can sell their stories millions of copies. Now, what is wrong with us? The eagerness to share our mind? or it is simply a reaction to loneliness.
